Used Hybrid and EV Prices Surge by $3,600 in 2026 Despite Tax Credit Expiry

Used vehicle prices in the United States have continued to climb in 2026, with hybrids and EVs seeing the most significant increases. According to a new Carfax study, average prices for used hybrids and EVs are up by more than $3,600 so far this year, even after the federal tax credit ended.

Significant Price Increases Across Segments

Carfax data shows that since the start of 2026, average prices for used sedans, hatchbacks, and wagons have risen by more than $1,350. Used pickup trucks, luxury cars, and SUVs each saw average price increases of around $1,500 in the first half of the year.

Used vans and minivans experienced even larger gains, with average prices up by more than $2,000. Luxury SUVs climbed nearly $2,800, or about 4.9 percent, while luxury cars jumped by 12.6 percent for the year.

June 2026: Monthly Trends

In June, prices continued to rise across every major vehicle segment, though the increases varied. Used luxury cars saw the smallest monthly increase at about $10, while SUVs added nearly $200. Used cars, luxury SUVs, and vans and minivans each climbed by roughly $350, and pickup trucks increased by more than $400.

Hybrids and EVs posted the largest monthly jump, with prices rising by more than $850 in June alone. Overall, used car prices across Carfax increased by roughly 1.3 percent for the month, averaging just over $350—down from nearly $900 in May.

Regional Price Differences

Price changes for used vehicles varied significantly by region. In the Mid-Atlantic, used hybrids and EVs were up by an average of over $1,400 in June, compared with around $950 in the Midwest.

Average used van and minivan prices in the Midwest rose by roughly $200 in June, while in the Plains, they fell by about $450. Used luxury cars climbed by more than $1,200 in the Northeast but dropped by roughly $900 in the West. In the South, used pickup trucks rose by more than $1,200 on average.

Why this matters

The continued rise in used vehicle prices, especially for hybrids and EVs, highlights ongoing demand in the market. Buyers seeking more affordable or fuel-efficient options may find higher costs than expected, while sellers could benefit from these elevated prices.

Regional differences also mean that shoppers may see varying price trends depending on where they live, making it important to track local market conditions.
