Volkswagen ID. Era 5S PHEV Debuts in China with 160 km EV Range and Aggressive Pricing

Volkswagen has officially launched the ID. Era 5S plug-in hybrid sedan at the 2026 Chengdu Auto Show. With a limited-time starting price of $13,326 (~AUD 18,753), the ID. Era 5S becomes the most affordable new-energy vehicle in Volkswagen’s China lineup. The model is available in five trim levels and is positioned to compete with both Volkswagen’s own compact sedans and popular domestic NEV rivals.

Affordable Entry into Volkswagen’s NEV Lineup

The ID. Era 5S is the second model in the ID. Era lineup from the SAIC-VW joint venture. Its pricing is comparable to Volkswagen’s established compact ICE sedans such as the Bora, Lavida, and Sagitar, making it an accessible option for buyers considering a shift to electrified vehicles.

This new PHEV also enters a competitive segment, going up against models like the BYD Seal 06, BYD Qin Plus, and Geely Galaxy Starshine 6.

Powertrain, Battery, and Charging

The ID. Era 5S combines a 1.5-litre 80 kW (107 hp) naturally aspirated engine with a 130 kW (174 hp) electric motor, paired through a one-speed DHT transmission. Power comes from a 19.1 kWh LFP battery supplied by Rept Battero Energy, delivering a CLTC-rated electric range of 160 km (~99 miles).

Charging options include both AC home charging and DC fast charging, with the latter enabling a 30-80% charge in just 15 minutes. The liquid-cooled LFP battery also supports vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, offering up to 3.5 kW of external power output.

The 5S runs on regular 92RON petrol, and fuel consumption with an empty battery is rated at 4.19 L/100 km.

Interior Features and Technology

Inside, the ID. Era 5S adopts a minimalist design tailored for the tech-focused Chinese market. It features a 15.6-inch infotainment screen and an 8.8-inch dashboard display, with most controls integrated into the two-spoke steering wheel.

Connectivity options include Apple CarPlay, Huawei HiCar, and Carlink, while a 6-speaker sound system comes standard. The column shifter stalk frees up centre console space, now used for phone holders, cupholders, and additional storage.

Comfort features include front ventilated seats and seat heating for both front and rear passengers. Both front seats can fold flat to create a twin-bed configuration, similar to the setup in FAW-VW’s Jetta M6 EV sedan.

Advanced Driver Assistance

The ID. Era 5S is Volkswagen’s first sedan to offer Navigation-on-Autopilot (NOA). All but the base trim come equipped with L2 assisted-driving capabilities, developed in partnership with Momenta, Carizon, and Horizon Robotics.

These systems enable automated lane changes and parking manoeuvres, enhancing convenience and safety for drivers.

Why this matters

The launch of the ID. Era 5S at a competitive price point expands Volkswagen’s new-energy offerings in China and provides buyers with a more affordable entry into plug-in hybrid technology. Its combination of electric range, charging flexibility, and advanced driver assistance features positions it as a strong contender in the growing NEV market.

By offering a PHEV with modern tech and comfort features at a price similar to its traditional compact sedans, Volkswagen is broadening its appeal to both new and existing customers in China.

What this means for buyers

Buyers looking for an affordable plug-in hybrid sedan now have a new option from a global brand, with features and pricing that rival leading domestic NEVs. Those considering a switch from a traditional ICE sedan to an electrified model may find the ID. Era 5S an attractive choice, especially with its limited-time launch pricing.

Potential customers should compare the ID. Era 5S with other models in the segment, such as the BYD Seal 06, BYD Qin Plus, and Geely Galaxy Starshine 6, to determine which best meets their needs for range, technology, and comfort.
