Volkswagen ID. Tiguan: New Electric SUV Moves Beyond ID.4 Roots

Volkswagen is preparing to launch the ID. Tiguan, its next-generation electric SUV, later this year. According to Electrek, this model will not simply be a rebadged ID.4, but a significant evolution in both design and technology. The ID. Tiguan is set to debut by the end of 2026, marking a major shift in Volkswagen’s electric vehicle strategy.

ID. Tiguan: A New Direction for Volkswagen’s Electric SUVs

Volkswagen announced in April that it would end production of the ID.4 at its Chattanooga, Tennessee plant, shifting its focus to more popular gas-powered SUVs like the three-row Atlas. However, the electric SUV remains on sale, with Volkswagen stating it has enough supply of current ID.4 models to support customer demand into 2027.

The ID. Tiguan, spotted during cold-weather testing earlier this year, will take over from the ID.4 and adopt the well-known Tiguan nameplate. This move is part of Volkswagen’s strategy to move away from its previous number-based naming system for EVs.

Design and Platform Upgrades

Recent spy images confirm that the ID. Tiguan will closely resemble the traditional Tiguan, featuring a more squared-off front end, new headlights, and a redesigned hood. The side profile reveals new doors and traditional-style handles that pop out, giving the SUV a more conventional appearance compared to the current ID.4.

Volkswagen is also reintroducing physical buttons for climate control and other key functions, responding to driver feedback. These controls will be located below the center navigation screen and on the steering wheel. The ID. Tiguan will be built on Volkswagen’s new MEB+ platform, which also underpins the ID. Polo and ID.3 Neo.

Performance and Range Expectations

While Volkswagen has not yet released full technical details for the ID. Tiguan, the outgoing ID.4 offers some clues. The ID.4 is powered by an 82 kWh battery, delivering an EPA-estimated range of up to 291 miles (~468 km) for the rear-wheel-drive version and around 263 miles (~423 km) for the all-wheel-drive model. Under WLTP testing, the 2026 ID.4 achieves up to 351 miles (~566 km) of range.

The ID. Tiguan is expected to benefit from recent battery and electric drive updates, which should improve both driving range and charging speeds compared to the current ID.4.

Competitor Comparison

The Volkswagen ID. Tiguan will enter a highly competitive segment, facing off against established rivals such as the Hyundai Tucson, Toyota RAV4, and Honda CR-V. The Hyundai Tucson is known for its generous technology features and warranty coverage, often appealing to value-focused buyers. The Toyota RAV4 remains a popular choice for its reliability and broad appeal, while the Honda CR-V is a mainstream option with a strong reputation among five-passenger compact SUVs.

Historical Context

Volkswagen sold 4.8 million vehicles globally in 2024, representing a 1.4% year-over-year decline. In China, the company’s largest market, sales reached 2.2 million units in 2024, down 8.3% from the previous year. The introduction of the ID. Tiguan comes at a time when Volkswagen is seeking to regain momentum in the face of shifting consumer preferences and increased competition in the EV space.

Why this matters

The debut of the ID. Tiguan signals Volkswagen’s commitment to evolving its electric vehicle lineup and leveraging its most recognized nameplates. By moving away from the number-based naming system and focusing on familiar models, Volkswagen aims to attract more traditional SUV buyers to its EV offerings.

With the ID. Tiguan set to replace the ID.4 at the Emden, Germany plant, Volkswagen is positioning itself to better compete in a rapidly changing market, especially as rivals launch updated electric SUVs with improved technology and range.

What this means for buyers

Buyers considering a Volkswagen electric SUV may want to wait for the official debut of the ID. Tiguan, expected by the end of 2026. The new model promises a more conventional SUV design, improved controls, and likely better range and charging performance. Those interested in the current ID.4 should note that supply will remain available into 2027, but the ID. Tiguan will represent Volkswagen’s latest advancements in the segment.
