Zoox Grows US Robotaxi Market Share as Waymo and Tesla See Shifts in 2026

While much of the robotaxi spotlight in the US has focused on Waymo and Tesla, new data shows Amazon-backed Zoox is quietly gaining ground. According to app analytics firm Apptopia, Zoox has significantly increased its share of active monthly users in 2026, even as Waymo remains the dominant player and Tesla’s numbers fluctuate.

Zoox Expands Its Presence

Zoox, supported by Amazon, has grown its share of the US robotaxi market from 15% in January 2026 to 25% by June 2026, according to Apptopia. This growth comes as Zoox doubled its monthly active users over the same period.

The company’s expansion has been driven by operational moves rather than just marketing. In late March 2026, Zoox quadrupled its San Francisco service area, more than doubled its Las Vegas footprint, began public deployments in Austin and Miami, and integrated its vehicles with the Uber app in Las Vegas. These steps have translated directly into increased app demand and user numbers.

Waymo Remains the Market Leader, But Growth Slows

Waymo continues to lead the US robotaxi market, but its share dropped from 79% in January 2026 to 69% in June 2026. While its user base is still growing, the pace has slowed, with monthly active user growth falling from 79% year over year to just 15%.

A notable shift occurred within Waymo’s user demographics. The 17-25 age group, which was a small segment in January, grew several times over by June and saw user churn drop from nearly 100% to about 60%. Meanwhile, Waymo’s core 26-45 rider group lost some market penetration during the same period.

Tesla Robotaxi: Peaks and Declines

Tesla’s share of the US robotaxi market held steady at around 6% from January to June 2026, but the story is more complex beneath the surface. “Tesla Robotaxi’s usage jumped after its April city launches, then shed more than a fifth of its active users in June. Expansion headlines and durable ridership are not the same thing,” Apptopia reported.

Tesla Robotaxi downloads more than doubled from January to their April peak, coinciding with the launch of unsupervised rides in Dallas and Houston ahead of schedule. Active users reached a high in May, then dropped by over 20% in June, even as the app remained available in its markets.

User Retention and Market Dynamics

Apptopia’s Tom Grant commented, “The bull case treats Tesla’s robotaxi as a question of when, not if, so a month where active users fall after a multi-city launch is the kind of thing worth sitting with. Trial is easy to manufacture with new cities and a launch cycle; retention is the part you can’t fake. Right now the app data says Waymo and Zoox are keeping riders and Tesla is still proving it can.”

Seasonal factors such as summer travel and tourism in cities like Las Vegas and Miami have inflated trial numbers across all three apps, making user retention a more reliable indicator than app installs. On this measure, Zoox has managed to hold onto its new users, while Tesla’s user base has thinned.

Why this matters

The latest data highlights a shift in the competitive landscape of the US robotaxi market. Zoox’s rapid growth in active users and market share demonstrates that it is becoming a serious contender alongside Waymo and Tesla.

For industry watchers, the focus is moving from headline-grabbing launches to sustained user retention and real-world adoption. As Zoox expands its service areas and Waymo targets younger riders, the battle for long-term market leadership is intensifying.

What this means for buyers

Consumers interested in autonomous ride-hailing services now have more options as Zoox expands into new cities and integrates with platforms like Uber. If you are considering trying a robotaxi service, pay attention to which companies are growing their user base and retaining riders, as these are signs of a more reliable and accessible service.

For those waiting for Tesla’s robotaxi to become a daily option, the current data suggests that while initial interest is high, consistent usage and retention are still developing. Watching how these trends evolve through the rest of 2026 will be key for anyone considering regular use of autonomous ride-hailing.
