I Produced More Power Than I Used — And Still Got Billed. Here’s How I Fixed It

When I set up my home solar panels, I assumed generating more power than I consumed would mean saying goodbye to electricity bills forever. So, you can imagine my reaction when I opened my latest energy statement and saw an unexpected charge—even after producing a net surplus of electricity.

This is a common, frustrating trap for solar homeowners. To understand why it happens, you have to look at when energy is produced versus when it is used:

  • The Daytime Surge: My solar system peaks around midday when the sun is highest, generating far more power than my house needs.

  • The Evening Spike: Household electricity demand spikes in the evening when we return from work, turn on lights, cook, and run heavy appliances.

Because of this mismatch, I was sending cheap excess power back to the grid during the day, only to buy expensive grid electricity back at night. Add in fixed grid connection fees and the gap between low export credit rates and high import charges, and the math works against you.

To fix this and eliminate those unexpected bills, I recommend two primary strategies:

  1. Install a Home Battery System: Storing excess daylight energy lets you power your home through the evening peak without drawing from the grid.

  2. Shift Your Consumption Habits: Run high-load appliances—like dishwashers, washing machines, or electric vehicle chargers—during midday hours when solar output is at its highest.
