Lucid Cosmos Midsize SUV Spotted Testing Alongside Tesla Model Y Ahead of Launch

A camouflaged Lucid Cosmos prototype has been seen testing near the company’s Arizona factory, offering a rare side-by-side comparison with the Tesla Model Y. As Lucid prepares for a full public reveal this summer and production later in 2026, the Cosmos is shaping up to be a direct competitor in the increasingly crowded midsize electric SUV segment.

A Lucid Cosmos prototype, wrapped in black-and-white camouflage, was recently photographed on public roads close to Lucid’s Casa Grande, Arizona facility. The image, shared on social media, shows the Cosmos parked next to a Tesla Model Y, providing a clear look at its real-world proportions.

The two vehicles appear closely matched in size, reinforcing Lucid’s positioning of the Cosmos as a midsize SUV aimed squarely at the segment’s current leader.

Key Specs and Efficiency Targets

Lucid has announced that the Cosmos will offer 300 miles (~480 km) of range from a 69 kWh battery, thanks to an efficiency rating of up to 4.5 mi/kWh. This makes it approximately 10% more efficient than other midsize electric SUVs currently available.

The Cosmos is designed for rapid charging, able to add over 200 miles (~320 km) of range in just 14 minutes using DC fast charging. Performance figures include a 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds for the all-wheel-drive version.

Underpinning these numbers is Lucid’s new Atlas drive unit, which is 40% more power-dense than competing systems, uses 30% fewer parts, and delivers a 37% cost reduction compared to the Zeus unit found in the larger Gravity SUV.

Market Position and Competitive Landscape

The Cosmos and its sibling, the Earth SUV, are the first models on Lucid’s new midsize platform, with prices starting under 50,000 USD (~70,000 AUD, ~43,000 EUR, ~37,000 GBP). This marks a significant shift from Lucid’s previous six-figure Air sedan and Gravity SUV, aiming to reach a broader customer base.

The Tesla Model Y, which starts at 40,000 USD (~56,000 AUD, ~34,000 EUR, ~30,000 GBP) and exceeds 45,000 USD (~63,000 AUD, ~39,000 EUR, ~34,000 GBP) for dual-motor versions, remains the best-selling EV in the US, accounting for roughly one in three EV sales in Q1 2026. Other competitors include the upcoming Rivian R2 (under 50,000 USD (~70,000 AUD, ~43,000 EUR, ~37,000 GBP)), Chevrolet Equinox EV (around 35,000 USD (~49,000 AUD, ~30,000 EUR, ~26,000 GBP)), and the Xiaomi YU7, which recently overtook the Model Y in China.

Lucid’s approach focuses on technology and efficiency rather than solely on price. The Cosmos achieves its 300-mile (~480 km) range with a smaller battery than most rivals, which typically require 75-82 kWh to reach similar distances. The vehicle will also feature bidirectional charging capabilities, including vehicle-to-home (V2H), vehicle-to-load (V2L), and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) functions—features not yet widely available on the Model Y.

Production Timeline and Outlook

Lucid plans to begin Cosmos production at its AMP-2 facility in Saudi Arabia in late 2026, with US manufacturing at the Arizona plant to follow 6-12 months later. As a result, North American customers may not see deliveries until 2027.

The company’s production guidance for 2026 is 25,000-27,000 vehicles, reflecting a cautious ramp-up as Lucid seeks to expand its presence in the midsize EV market.

Why this matters

The Lucid Cosmos represents a pivotal move for Lucid as it transitions from luxury, low-volume models to more accessible, higher-volume vehicles. Its focus on efficiency, rapid charging, and advanced drive technology could set new benchmarks for midsize electric SUVs.

With competition intensifying from established brands and new entrants, the Cosmos will be closely watched as a test of Lucid’s ability to scale production and deliver on its ambitious promises. Success in this segment could significantly impact the broader EV market and Lucid’s future trajectory.
