BYD has introduced its first hybrid model to the South Korean market with the debut of the Sealion 6 DM-i plug-in hybrid SUV. The vehicle was unveiled at the 2026 Busan Mobility Show, with pre-sales now open and a starting price of $24,414 (~AUD 35,391).
Sealion 6 DM-i Debuts at Busan Mobility Show
BYD presented the Sealion 6 DM-i on June 26 at the 2026 Busan Mobility Show held at BEXCO in Busan. This marks the first time BYD has brought a hybrid model to South Korea, expanding its local lineup beyond fully electric vehicles.
The Sealion 6 DM-i is sold as the Sealion 06 DM-i in China and is a core model in BYD’s global SUV portfolio, which has achieved more than 1.1 million units sold worldwide.

Technical Highlights and Features
The Sealion 6 DM-i uses BYD’s DM-i (Dual Mode-intelligent) technology, which is designed with an ‘electric-first’ approach. The system allows the vehicle to operate in pure electric, series, parallel, series-parallel, and engine-only modes, prioritizing electric performance and quietness while using the engine mainly to improve efficiency.
Power comes from a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine delivering a maximum output of 96 kW (129 hp) and peak torque of 220 Nm, paired with a motor that produces up to 150 kW and 300 Nm of torque. The vehicle is equipped with BYD’s lithium iron phosphate (LFP) Blade Battery, offering a capacity of 18.3 kWh and an EV mode range of up to 70 km (~43 miles).
Charging options include DC fast charging at up to 18 kW, enabling a 30% to 80% charge in about 30 minutes, and V2L power output of up to 3.3 kW. The Sealion 6 DM-i also features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 15.6-inch intelligent cockpit system, supporting 4G connectivity, cloud services, over-the-air updates, and compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
BYD’s Strategy in South Korea
BYD has stated its intention to sell more than 10,000 vehicles in South Korea in 2026, a 64% increase from the 6,107 passenger cars sold in 2025, which was the company’s first year in the local passenger car market.
The company plans to introduce three models in South Korea in 2026: a rear-wheel-drive Seal, the Dolphin compact hatchback, and a model equipped with DM-i technology. BYD Korea described 2025 as a ‘honeymoon period’ focused on building relationships with dealer partners and laying the groundwork for expansion.
Why this matters
The introduction of the Sealion 6 DM-i marks BYD’s entry into South Korea’s hybrid SUV segment, bringing its DM-i plug-in hybrid technology to a market dominated by established players such as Hyundai Motor Group, General Motors, and Renault.
This launch reflects BYD’s ongoing efforts to expand its presence in international markets and diversify its offerings for South Korean consumers.

What this means for buyers
Buyers in South Korea now have access to BYD’s plug-in hybrid technology with the Sealion 6 DM-i, offering a blend of electric driving and gasoline efficiency. Those interested in a hybrid SUV with advanced connectivity and charging features may find the Sealion 6 DM-i a compelling new option.
With BYD planning to introduce additional models in 2026, consumers can expect more choices in the near future.
