2027 Lexus NX Plug-In Hybrid Gains Larger Battery and Fast Charging Capability

Lexus has updated its NX lineup for 2027, dropping the gas-only version and focusing solely on hybrid and plug-in hybrid models. The new NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid stands out with a bigger battery, improved electric range, and the addition of DC fast charging via a NACS port. These changes aim to keep the NX competitive in the luxury compact SUV segment.

Electrified Powertrains Only for 2027

For 2027, Lexus has removed the gas-only NX from its lineup, offering only hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions. This shift reflects the brand’s commitment to electrification and aligns with broader industry trends.

The NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid now features a 22.7 kWh battery pack, up from 18.1 kWh in the previous model. This upgrade enables a manufacturer-estimated 45 miles (~72 km) of all-electric range, an increase of 8 miles (~13 km) over the outgoing version.

Faster Charging and More Power

A major update for the 2027 NX 450h+ is the introduction of DC fast charging, available through a native NACS port in North America. Lexus states the vehicle can charge from 10% to 80% in 35 minutes using a 50 kW DC fast charger. On AC power, a 6.6 kW 240-volt charger will fully recharge the battery from 10% to 100% in two and a half hours.

Performance has also improved. The NX 450h+ now delivers a combined 324 horsepower (up from 304 hp), with the front motor-generator producing 203 hp and the 2.5-liter gas engine contributing 186 hp. The rear-axle electric motor adds 54 hp. Lexus claims a 0-60 mph time of 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 124 mph (200 km/h).

Hybrid Model Updates and Features

The 2027 NX 350h hybrid receives a small power increase, now offering 244 hp combined—4 hp more than before. Both front- and all-wheel-drive versions are available, with the AWD model accelerating from 0-60 mph in 6.7 seconds and the FWD in 6.9 seconds.

All NX models benefit from revised suspension, improved chassis rigidity, and updated steering for enhanced driving dynamics. Inside, every trim features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14-inch central infotainment screen running the latest Lexus software. The steering wheel is slightly smaller than last year’s model, and a new horizontal control panel with translucent switches has been added.

Trim Levels and Safety Technology

The 2027 NX is offered in Premium, Premium+, F SPORT, and Luxury grades. All trims come standard with the LSS+ 4.0 driver assistance suite, which includes dynamic radar cruise control, lane centering, traffic jam assist, lane change assist, and automatic high beams.

The NX 350h hybrid is assembled in both Canada and Japan, while the NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid is produced exclusively in Japan.

Competitor Comparison

The 2027 Lexus NX faces strong competition in the luxury compact SUV segment. The BMW X3 xDrive30, while a popular German rival, is less efficient in its non-hybrid form with fuel economy of 27/33 mpg. The Audi Q5 offers a range of powertrains and remains a top choice for buyers seeking a blend of performance and luxury. The Genesis GV70 is also highly rated for its features and value, making the segment especially competitive as more brands move toward electrification.

Why this matters

Lexus’s decision to eliminate the gas-only NX and focus on electrified models signals a significant shift in its product strategy. The larger battery, improved range, and fast-charging capability of the NX 450h+ address key concerns for plug-in hybrid buyers, such as electric-only driving distance and charging convenience.

These updates help Lexus remain competitive as luxury SUV buyers increasingly expect advanced electrification and technology features.

What this means for buyers

Buyers considering the 2027 Lexus NX can expect improved electric range, faster charging, and enhanced performance compared to previous models. With the elimination of the gas-only version, all NX options now offer some level of electrification.

Shoppers should compare the NX’s features and range with rivals like the BMW X3, Audi Q5, and Genesis GV70 to determine the best fit for their needs. Regional availability includes assembly in both Canada and Japan for the hybrid, and exclusively in Japan for the plug-in hybrid.
