BYD Sealion 08 Receives Over 12,000 Orders in First 24 Hours After Launch

BYD’s new Sealion 08 SUV has attracted more than 12,000 firm orders within just 24 hours of its launch, according to Zhang Zhuo, general manager of BYD’s Ocean Series sales division. The model is available in both battery-electric and plug-in hybrid versions, offering a wide range of configurations and features.

Order Surge and Pricing

The Sealion 08’s rapid order intake was confirmed by Zhang Zhuo, who leads BYD’s Ocean Series sales. The SUV is offered in eight variants, with prices ranging from $34,128 (~AUD 47,666) to $41,550 (~AUD 58,032). Customers can select between battery-electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains.

Design and Technology

Inspired by BYD’s Ocean S concept car, the Sealion 08 features split headlights with a full-width light bar and dynamic air channels on the front bumper. A roof-mounted lidar sensor supports advanced driver-assistance features.

All versions come equipped with BYD’s God’s Eye B intelligent driving assistance system, including the God’s Eye 5.0 platform. Automated parking assistance and urban navigation assistance are standard across the range.

Interior Features

The Sealion 08’s interior adopts BYD’s Ocean Aesthetics 2.0 design language, highlighted by a light beige colour scheme, soft leather-like surfaces, and mother-of-pearl-pattern decorative panels. The cabin includes an adjustable ambient light strip and oval chrome air vents.

A floating central touchscreen, full digital instrument cluster, and three-spoke multifunction steering wheel are standard. The dashboard retains a limited number of physical controls for frequently used functions. Sound-insulating materials and premium audio components are also featured.

Buyers can choose between five or six seats. Six-seat versions offer two second-row captain’s chairs with armrests, electric adjustment, and leg supports, as well as an available large roof-mounted entertainment screen for rear passengers.

Powertrain Options and Performance

The plug-in hybrid Sealion 08 uses BYD’s fifth-generation DM technology, combining a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine (115 kW) with electric motors. The PHEV range includes single-motor (200 kW/268 hp) and dual-motor (each 200 kW/268 hp) versions. The plug-in hybrid offers up to 400 km (~249 miles) of CLTC-rated electric range and a combined range of up to 1,650 km (~1,025 miles) with a full tank and battery. Fuel consumption is listed at 4.6 liters per 100 km with a depleted battery.

Battery-electric versions are available with single motors (320 kW/429 hp or 370 kW/496 hp) or dual motors (215 kW/288 hp front, 370 kW/496 hp rear). Two battery pack options are offered: 92.093 kWh and 115.072 kWh. Depending on configuration, CLTC-rated range is either 800 km (~497 miles) or 900 km (~559 miles).

Charging and Advanced Features

The Sealion 08 supports BYD’s fast-charging technology, enabling a usable charge in five minutes and a full charge in nine minutes under the right conditions. Additional technologies include BYD’s DiSus-A intelligent body-control system, dual-chamber air suspension with road-preview capability, and rear-wheel steering.

All versions come standard with BYD’s second-generation Blade battery.

Why this matters

The strong initial demand for the BYD Sealion 08 demonstrates significant consumer interest in advanced electrified SUVs in China. With a broad selection of powertrains, high-tech features, and rapid charging capabilities, the Sealion 08 expands BYD’s presence in the competitive SUV segment.

What this means for buyers

Buyers in China now have access to a new SUV that offers both plug-in hybrid and battery-electric options, advanced driver assistance, and flexible seating configurations. Those considering a large electrified SUV may find the Sealion 08’s range, technology, and rapid charging particularly appealing.
