BYD Teases Likely Next-Gen Han for Guangzhou Auto Show Debut

BYD has confirmed it will unveil a new model at the upcoming Guangzhou Auto Show, with regulatory filings indicating it is likely the next-generation Han sedan. The update comes as BYD aims to reinvigorate its sedan lineup amid declining Han sales.

New Model Set for Guangzhou Auto Show

BYD (HKEX: 1211) will introduce a new model at the Guangzhou Auto Show later this month. While the company has not officially named the vehicle, recent regulatory filings point to the next-generation Han as the likely debut.

Lu Tian, general manager of BYD’s Dynasty sales division, stated on Weibo that a ‘model highly requested by customers’ would be presented at the event. The Guangzhou Auto Show will run from November 27 to December 6, with the opening day typically reserved for media and major vehicle launches.

Details from Regulatory Filings

The new Han appeared in the 412th batch of vehicle filings released by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on October 16. These filings cover three battery-electric variants and one plug-in hybrid variant, all configured with five seats.

The sedan measures 5,156 mm (~203 inches) in length and 1,969 mm (~77.5 inches) in width, with a wheelbase of 3,030 mm (~119.3 inches). Compared to the Han EV flash charging edition launched in April, the new model is 161 mm (~6.3 inches) longer and has a 110 mm (~4.3 inches) longer wheelbase.

Battery-electric variants will offer both single-motor rear-wheel-drive and dual-motor all-wheel-drive options. The two rear-wheel-drive versions have peak motor outputs of 245 kW (329 hp) and 300 kW, respectively. The all-wheel-drive variant combines a 200 kW front motor with a 320 kW rear motor, delivering a combined peak output of 520 kW. The plug-in hybrid variant pairs a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine with a 200 kW drive motor.

Positioning in the BYD Lineup

The new Han is a distinct model from the Da Han, which BYD launched on October 13. The Da Han sits higher in the lineup, measuring 5,256 mm (~207 inches) in length with a wheelbase of 3,130 mm (~123.2 inches), and starts at $35,392 (~AUD 50,536).

Sales Performance and Upcoming Launches

The Han series sold 6,566 vehicles in October, representing a 52.11% decrease year-on-year but a 159.63% increase from September. Over the first ten months of the year, cumulative Han sales reached 50,890 vehicles, down 67.39% compared to the same period last year.

In contrast, the broader Dynasty lineup saw growth, with 203,040 vehicles sold in October—up 13.6% year-on-year and 14.4% month-on-month—marking the first time this year that monthly sales exceeded 200,000 units.

BYD is also preparing to launch the third-generation Tang, a large five-seat SUV. The new Tang made its debut at the Chengdu Auto Show in August and is expected to go on sale this quarter, with display vehicles already arriving at dealerships.

Why this matters

The introduction of the next-generation Han comes at a critical time for BYD, as the sedan’s sales have declined sharply over the past year. Updating the Han lineup could help BYD regain momentum in the competitive Chinese sedan market.

Strong performance from the Dynasty lineup overall suggests that BYD’s strategy of refreshing key models and expanding its SUV offerings is resonating with buyers.

What this means for buyers

Buyers interested in BYD’s sedan offerings should watch for the official unveiling of the next-generation Han at the Guangzhou Auto Show. Those considering a large SUV may also want to look out for the third-generation Tang, which is set to reach dealerships soon.
