FAW-Volkswagen is preparing to open pre-orders for its new ID. AURA L5 all-electric sedan on November 16. As the second model in the ID. AURA lineup and its first all-electric sedan, the L5 is expected to launch within 2026. The vehicle introduces several new features and technologies to Volkswagen’s electric range in China.
Pre-Orders and Launch Timeline
According to local automotive media, the FAW-Volkswagen ID. AURA L5 will open for pre-orders on November 16. The L5 is anticipated to officially launch within this year, though FAW-Volkswagen has not yet confirmed the arrangement through its official channels.
The L5 follows the T6 SUV, which became the first model in the ID. AURA lineup when it went on sale in September.
Design and Platform
The L5 is developed on Volkswagen’s CMP (Compact Main Platform) all-electric platform. It measures 4,883 mm (~192 inches) in length, 1,881 mm (~74 inches) in width, and 1,506 mm (~59 inches) in height, with a wheelbase of 2,820 mm (~111 inches).
A notable design feature is the power liftgate, which opens to an angle of more than 70 degrees and offers a lateral opening width of over 1,000 mm (~39 inches), making it easier to load bulky items compared to traditional sedans.
Powertrain and Battery
The single-motor version of the L5 delivers a peak power output of 155 kW (208 hp) and a top speed of 175 km/h (109 mph). The dual-motor variant features 155 kW motors at both the front and rear axles.
All versions of the L5 are equipped with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, supplied by CATL and Gotion High-tech.
Advanced Driver Assistance and Technology
The L5 will be the first Volkswagen model to feature the self-developed Carizon HS8 (Hyper Sense 8) driver assistance system. This solution is a result of a joint venture between Volkswagen’s software subsidiary Cariad and Chinese AI chipmaker Horizon Robotics, established in December 2023.
Carizon HS8 supports parking-space-to-parking-space urban Navigation on Autopilot (NOA), highway NOA, and multiple parking assistance functions. A LiDAR unit is available as an option on all four filed variants.
Development and Lineup Context
The L5 is the production version of the ID. AURA concept car, which Volkswagen unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show in April 2025. The model was jointly developed by Chinese and German design teams.
The entire ID. AURA lineup uses the CEA (China Electronic Architecture) system, developed in partnership with Xpeng.
Why this matters
The introduction of the ID. AURA L5 marks a significant step for FAW-Volkswagen as it expands its electric vehicle offerings in China. The L5 brings new technology and design features to the market, including advanced driver assistance and a practical liftgate solution.
This launch also fulfills part of FAW-Volkswagen’s plan to introduce four new energy vehicles in 2026, with the L5 representing the sedan component of the ID. AURA lineup.
What this means for buyers
Buyers interested in the latest electric sedans from Volkswagen can look forward to pre-orders for the L5 starting November 16. While pricing, range, and battery capacity details have not yet been announced, the L5’s combination of advanced features and practical design may appeal to those seeking a modern EV in China.
Potential customers should monitor official FAW-Volkswagen channels for further announcements regarding specifications and availability.
