Budget Direct Took My Money — Then Refused My EV Insurance Claim

Regulatory Scrutiny and the Industry Breakdown

This behavior comes alongside wider scrutiny of Budget Direct’s business practices. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) has previously taken action against Auto & General over allegations of misleading discount representations that impacted tens of thousands of policyholders.

While the company displays awards like Canstar Insurer of the Year across its marketing materials, slick branding and website accolades mean nothing if an insurer abandons customers the moment an actual claim is filed.

Electric vehicles made up roughly 16% of all Australian new car sales last month. Insurers have had years to build certified repair networks, organize parts logistics, and account for high-voltage battery assessments. Taking money from EV owners and then denying claims or cancelling coverage when parts sourcing or logistics become inconvenient is unacceptable. If an underwriter cannot support an EV platform, they shouldn’t issue the policy in the first place.

The Human Reality

Behind every claim reference number is an actual family. Over the past three years, my family has had to navigate hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical costs—including a recent $20,000 bill for treatment related to my wife’s battle with stage 4 terminal cancer. Dealing with withheld money, an unreturned $1,200 excess, and a damaged car while navigating critical family health crises underscores just how broken this customer experience really is.

Advice for Australian EV Drivers

  1. Verify Repairer Certification: Get written confirmation that your insurer has active, contracted repair partners equipped for your exact EV make and model.

  2. Review Cancellation Clauses: Check your Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) to understand under what grounds the company can terminate a policy mid-term.

  3. Document Everything: Retain every claim reference, payment receipt, email thread, and written correspondence. You will need them if you are forced to file a formal dispute with the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA).

Budget Direct and Auto & General are welcome to provide a public response, and I will gladly share their explanation. In the meantime, if you have faced sudden policy cancellations or denied claims on your electric car in Australia, let me know. This issue needs transparent, widespread scrutiny.
