Early Rivian R2 Auction Nets Only Modest Premium Over Sticker Price

One of the first Rivian R2 Performance Launch Edition models has been auctioned online, but the result may disappoint those hoping for quick profits. The electric crossover, which launched on June 9, sold for just above its original sticker price despite high initial demand.

Auction Results for the Rivian R2 Performance Launch Edition

The Rivian R2 Performance Launch Edition was recently listed on Cars&Bids, where it attracted only four bids before the auction closed. The final sale price was $63,500 (~AUD 91,043), just $2,015 (~AUD 2,889) above its sticker price of $61,485 (~AUD 88,154).

The auctioned vehicle was a Catalina Cove R2 with only 71 miles (~114 km) on the odometer, having been purchased just last month. The seller described themselves as a “day 1 deposit holder,” indicating they reserved the R2 as soon as reservations opened.

Rivian R2 Performance Features and Launch Details

Rivian officially launched the R2 on June 9, 2026. The Performance model starts at $57,990 (~AUD 83,143) and is equipped with a dual-motor all-wheel drive system producing 656 hp (489 kW / 665 PS) and 609 lb-ft (825 Nm) of torque. This setup enables the R2 to accelerate from 0–60 mph (0–96 km/h) in just 3.6 seconds and achieve a range of up to 330 miles (~531 km) on a single charge.

Standard equipment includes Matrix LED headlights, Compass Yellow accents, 21-inch wheels, 12-way power front seats with heating and ventilation, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, birch wood trim, a nine-speaker premium audio system, and a flashlight integrated into the driver’s door.

Special Features of the Launch Edition

The Launch Edition of the R2 Performance adds several exclusive features. Buyers receive a special key fob and a lifetime subscription to Autonomy+, which provides Universal Hands-Free driving on over 3.5 million miles (~5.6 million km) of roads in the United States and Canada.

Additionally, the Launch Edition comes with a tow package, allowing the vehicle to tow up to 4,400 lbs (~1,996 kg).

Rivian’s Order Process and Availability

Despite the limited supply, the auction result suggests that resale premiums may be minimal for early R2 models. Rivian is currently “inviting reservation holders to order in rolling batches.” For those placing a reservation today, it typically takes about a week to receive estimated timing for an order invitation.

Why this matters

The modest auction premium for one of the first Rivian R2 Performance Launch Editions indicates that the days of large markups for new EVs may be fading, even for highly anticipated models. This outcome could influence both buyers and speculators who were expecting significant resale profits.

With Rivian managing demand by inviting reservation holders in batches, the market appears to be stabilizing, making it less likely for early flippers to see substantial gains.

What this means for buyers

For prospective Rivian R2 buyers, the auction result suggests there is little financial incentive to purchase early units for resale. Those interested in owning the R2 Performance may find it more practical to reserve directly from Rivian and wait for their order invitation.

Given the rolling batch order system, buyers should expect a short wait for estimated delivery timing, but are unlikely to face inflated prices on the secondary market.
