China’s wholesale sales of passenger new energy vehicles (NEVs) continued their upward trend in August, with volumes estimated at 1.51 million units. This marks a 16% increase compared to the same month last year, according to preliminary data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).
August NEV Wholesale Sales Show Continued Growth
The CPCA estimates that wholesale sales of passenger NEVs in China reached 1.51 million units in August. This represents a 16% year-on-year increase and a 4% rise compared to July. The growth extends a recovery that began after a pullback earlier in the year.
Despite the increase in wholesale volumes, the CPCA noted that retail demand remained weak in August. The back-to-school season, which typically boosts replacement demand, did not deliver the expected rebound in market activity this year.
Automakers Achieve Record Sales
Several leading automakers posted record NEV wholesale sales for August. BYD (HKEX: 1211), Geely Auto (HKEX: 0175), Chery Auto (HKEX: 9973), and Leapmotor (HKEX: 9863) all achieved their highest August figures to date.
GWM (HKEX: 2333), Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV), Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO), SAIC-GM-Wuling, SAIC Passenger Vehicle, and Arcfox also set new August records. In addition, SAIC-GM, GAC Toyota, GAC Trumpchi, and Changan Mazda reported their best-ever August results, indicating that growth is broadening across both domestic brands and joint ventures.
Company-reported data compiled by CnEVPost showed that BYD and Leapmotor set year-to-date or all-time monthly records in August. However, deliveries by Huawei-backed HIMA (Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance) declined year-on-year, highlighting uneven growth within the industry.
CPCA’s Methodology and Market Coverage
The CPCA’s latest estimate is based on manufacturers whose NEV wholesale volumes exceeded 10,000 units in July. These manufacturers accounted for 93% of China’s total passenger NEV wholesale volume that month.
A preliminary tally put the group’s August NEV sales at about 1.41 million units. Using previous market share data, the CPCA estimated the nationwide wholesale volume at approximately 1.51 million units for August.
