General Motors Launches Buick Electra GS Plug-In Hybrid Sedan in China

General Motors, in partnership with SAIC, is preparing to introduce the Buick Electra GS plug-in hybrid sedan to the Chinese market. The new model arrives as Buick faces a significant year-over-year decline in deliveries in China. The Electra GS was recently revealed through the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s homologation process.

Design and Dimensions

The Buick Electra GS is a large sedan, measuring 4,979 mm (~196 inches) in length, 1,914 mm (~75 inches) in width, and 1,495 mm (~59 inches) in height, with a wheelbase of 2,865 mm (~113 inches). It is 149 mm (~6 inches) longer than the BYD Qin L DM-i sedan. The exterior features a closed front end with a trapeze-shaped air intake, U-shaped headlights, semi-hidden door handles, a streamlined roofline, a single taillight unit, and a ducktail spoiler.

The Electra GS offers approach and departure angles of 13 and 14 degrees, respectively, and is available with either 18- or 19-inch wheels (225/50 R18 or 234/45 R19). An optional roof-mounted LiDAR sensor is also available. The curb weight ranges from 1,780 to 1,890 kg (~3,924 to ~4,167 lbs), with a gross weight of 2,300 kg (~5,071 lbs).

Powertrain and Battery Options

The entry-level Electra GS comes equipped with a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated 15FMC petrol engine, delivering a peak power output of 72 kW (97 hp). This engine, manufactured by SAIC, is paired with a 165 kW (221 hp) electric motor. The same engine is also found in models such as the Roewe Jiayue 07 crossover, Saic H5, and Buick Electra E7 SUV. The top speed for this configuration is 190 km/h.

A more powerful variant features a 1.5-liter turbocharged LD3 engine with a peak output of 115 kW (154 hp), also paired with a 165 kW (221 hp) electric motor. This version uses an LFP battery supplied by Zenergy. Both battery pack options for the Electra GS are sourced from Zenergy and Rept Battero.

Market Context and Competitor Overview

The Buick Electra GS is positioned to compete with other plug-in hybrid sedans in China. For comparison, the BYD Qin L DM-i sedan features a 1.5-liter engine producing 74 kW (99 hp) and an electric motor rated at 160 kW (215 hp). According to China EV DataTracker, BYD delivered 70,740 units of the Qin L DM-i sedan in China from January to September 2026.

Buick’s own deliveries in China declined by 20.4% year-over-year, highlighting the importance of new models like the Electra GS in the brand’s lineup.

Why this matters

The launch of the Buick Electra GS marks General Motors’ continued investment in the plug-in hybrid segment in China, a market where competition is intense and consumer preferences are rapidly evolving. With Buick’s declining sales, the Electra GS represents an effort to regain traction and appeal to buyers seeking electrified options.

The model’s combination of established internal combustion technology with modern electric powertrains and battery options positions it as a contender in the growing PHEV market.

What this means for buyers

Buyers in China considering a plug-in hybrid sedan will soon have another option with the Buick Electra GS. Those comparing models should look closely at the Electra GS’s dimensions, powertrain choices, and available features such as LiDAR. Shoppers interested in alternatives like the BYD Qin L DM-i may want to compare performance and pricing once the Electra GS is officially launched.
