BMW iX Sells Out in the US as New iX5 Electric SUV Prepares for Launch

BMW is closing the chapter on its iX electric SUV in the US, with the 2026 model year now essentially sold out. As the iX exits the market, BMW is gearing up to introduce the iX5, a new electric SUV that brings significant advancements in range, charging, and technology.

BMW iX Discontinued After Four-Year Run

The BMW iX, which debuted in the US in 2022 as the brand’s first dedicated electric SUV, will be discontinued after the 2026 model year. According to CarsDirect, only about 10 new iX models remain available nationwide.

BMW confirmed earlier this year that the iX would be phased out to make way for its next generation of fully electric vehicles.

Neue Klasse Platform Ushers in Next-Gen BMW EVs

BMW’s Neue Klasse vehicles, beginning with the 2027 iX3, represent a major step forward for the brand’s electric lineup. The Neue Klasse platform introduces BMW’s sixth-generation (Gen6) eDrive, new battery technology, and an 800-volt electrical system.

BMW states that the Gen6 eDrive system delivers 30% higher charging speeds and driving range compared to the previous generation. For example, the 2027 iX3 50 xDrive starts at $61,500 (~AUD 87,499) and offers an EPA-estimated range of up to 434 miles (~698 km), while the outgoing 2026 iX xDrive 60 had an EPA range of up to 364 miles (~586 km).

iX5: BMW’s New Flagship Electric SUV

BMW is preparing to launch the iX5 as a more direct replacement for the iX. The electric iX5 is expected to debut in early 2027, following the gas-powered 2027 X5 40 xDrive, which starts at $72,100 (~AUD 102,580).

At a recent international media event in Southern California, the iX5 60 xDrive demonstrated a peak charging rate of 464 kW. BMW reports that with up to 460 kW peak charging, the iX5 can add up to 170 miles (~274 km) of range in just 10 minutes, and charging from 10% to 80% takes only 22 minutes.

The iX5 uses a 144 kWh battery and is estimated to deliver up to 435 miles (~700 km) of range on a single charge. The dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain produces a combined 578 hp (425 kW) and 593 lb-ft (804 Nm) of torque, enabling 0 to 60 mph acceleration in 4.4 seconds. The iX5 can also tow up to 6,000 lbs (~2,722 kg).

Interior and Features

Inside, the iX5 features a 17.9-inch navigation touchscreen and BMW’s Panoramic Vision display that spans the windshield. An optional 14.6-inch passenger screen is also available.

The iX5 measures 197.2 inches (~5,011 mm) in length, 78.7 inches (~1,999 mm) in width, and 68.9 inches (~1,750 mm) in height, making it slightly longer and taller than the outgoing iX.

Production and Availability

BMW is expected to open orders for the new iX5 60 xDrive this month, with a starting price of $79,800 (~AUD 113,535). The full launch is planned for early 2027.

Production of the iX5 will begin at BMW’s Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina by the end of the year, marking the first time BMW will build a fully electric vehicle in the US. First deliveries are expected in early 2027.

Why this matters

The transition from the iX to the iX5 highlights BMW’s commitment to advancing electric vehicle technology, particularly in charging speed and driving range. The introduction of the Neue Klasse platform and US-based production signals a new era for BMW’s electric SUVs, offering consumers more capable and convenient options.

What this means for buyers

With the iX now essentially sold out, buyers interested in a premium electric SUV from BMW will soon have the option to order the iX5. Those seeking the latest in charging technology, range, and interior features should consider waiting for the iX5’s launch in early 2027.
