BYD Atto 2 Refresh Spotted in China With RWD and Optional LiDAR

BYD’s upcoming Atto 2 refresh, known as the Yuan UP in China, has been spotted ahead of its official launch. The latest updates bring a rear-wheel-drive layout, a relocated charge port, and an optional LiDAR system for advanced assisted driving. These changes aim to keep the Atto 2 competitive in China’s fast-evolving EV crossover segment.

Design and Cosmetic Updates

Recent sightings of the refreshed BYD Atto 2 reveal a new turquoise-themed exterior, with accented bumpers, door handles, side mirrors, and side skirts. The car also loses its colored lower lip on the front bumper. Inside, the main change is the ‘Yuan’ logo on the steering wheel, while the rest of the interior remains largely unchanged.

The charge port has been moved from the front fender to the rear, now resembling a conventional fuel door. This adjustment addresses a common complaint among Chinese owners who prefer rear-mounted charge ports for easier access when reversing into parking spaces.

Mechanical Changes: RWD and Suspension

The most significant updates are found underneath the Atto 2. The refreshed model adopts a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) layout, with Chinese versions receiving 100-kW and 120-kW rear motors (134 and 161 hp), compared to the previous 130-kW (174 hp) front motor. Global Atto 2s currently offer 130-kW and 150-kW (174- and 201-hp) front motors.

The wheelbase has increased by 150 mm, now measuring 2,770 mm (~109 inches), which is expected to improve cabin space. Government filings also indicate the new model is slightly longer and wider. All trims will feature front McPherson struts and multi-link rear suspension, aligning the Atto 2 with its main rival, the Geely EX2.

LiDAR and Assisted Driving Technology

A notable addition to the refreshed Atto 2 is the availability of an optional LiDAR unit. BYD already offers its LiDAR-assisted DiPilot 300 system on other models in China, such as the Dolphin and Dolphin Surf, as a $1,763 (~AUD 2,555) upgrade.

In contrast, competitors like the Geely EX2, Changan Nevo Q05, and MG4 Urban only provide vision and radar-based assisted-driving systems.

Battery, Range, and Charging

The refreshed Atto 2 will be available in China with 42-kWh and 52-kWh LFP battery packs, offering CLTC ranges of 410 km (~255 miles) and 505 km (~314 miles), respectively. These packs use BYD’s first-generation Blade Battery cells on a 400V platform.

While global Atto 2s can charge at up to 155 kW with the top-trim 65 kWh pack, Chinese versions are limited to 65 kW charging speed. The new model does not include BYD’s flash charging technology.

Sales Performance and Pricing

According to China EV DataTracker, BYD delivered 17,043 Atto 2 units domestically in May 2026, with monthly figures sometimes exceeding 20,000 units. The Atto 2 is currently priced between $10,988 (~AUD 15,928) and $17,598 (~AUD 25,510) in China.

Despite these strong numbers, the Atto 2 trails behind the Geely EX2, which delivered 38,751 units in the same month.

Competitor Comparison

The Geely EX2 remains the main rival to the BYD Atto 2, particularly in China’s EV crossover market. While the EX2 leads in sales, the Atto 2’s refreshed chassis, RWD drivetrain, and optional LiDAR system aim to close the gap. Other competitors include the Changan Nevo Q05 and MG4 Urban, both of which rely on vision and radar-based assisted-driving rather than LiDAR.

Why this matters

The Atto 2’s refresh demonstrates BYD’s commitment to keeping its EV lineup competitive in China’s rapidly evolving market. The addition of RWD, improved suspension, and advanced assisted-driving features could help the Atto 2 better compete with top-selling rivals.

As Chinese consumers increasingly demand advanced technology and comfort in affordable EVs, these updates may influence future offerings from other brands as well.

What this means for buyers

Buyers considering the BYD Atto 2 can expect a more spacious cabin, improved driving dynamics, and the option for advanced assisted-driving features with the new refresh. However, those prioritizing fast charging may want to note the absence of BYD’s flash charging technology in the Chinese version.

With strong competition from the Geely EX2 and others, shoppers should compare features, pricing, and real-world range before making a decision.
