China’s October NEV Wholesale Sales Hit Record 1.8 Million Units, Says CPCA

China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) market set a new record in October, with wholesale sales estimated at 1.8 million units according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). This marks a significant milestone for the sector, with year-on-year and month-on-month growth outpacing the broader auto market.

October NEV Sales Reach New Heights

The CPCA’s preliminary report released on Tuesday estimates that China’s passenger NEV wholesale sales reached 1.8 million units in October. This figure represents a 12% increase compared to the same month last year and an 8% rise from September.

The previous monthly record was 1,706,000 units, set in November 2025. With the latest figures, cumulative passenger NEV wholesale sales for the first ten months of 2026 have reached approximately 13.22 million units, up 9.9% year-on-year.

Top NEV Makers and Market Leaders

BYD, Geely, Chery, Changan, and Leapmotor emerged as the top five passenger NEV manufacturers by wholesale sales in October. BYD led the market with 483,125 units, followed by Geely with 213,165 units, Chery with 134,471 units, Changan with 122,422 units, and Leapmotor with 103,021 units.

Other automakers, including Geely, Chery, SAIC Passenger Vehicle, Xpeng, and Great Wall Motor, also posted record monthly NEV sales. Joint ventures such as SAIC Volkswagen and FAW-Volkswagen saw their NEV wholesale sales double year-on-year.

How the Estimate Was Calculated

The CPCA’s estimate is based on preliminary sales figures from major manufacturers. Automakers with NEV wholesale sales exceeding 10,000 units in September accounted for 93% of total passenger NEV wholesale sales that month. These manufacturers reported preliminary combined sales of about 1.62 million units in October.

Using September’s market-share breakdown, the CPCA extrapolated nationwide wholesale sales to reach the 1.8 million unit figure for October.

Competitor Comparison

BYD remains China’s top NEV maker by wholesale sales, maintaining a significant lead over its rivals. Geely Auto and Chery also rank among the top five, demonstrating strong performance in the competitive Chinese NEV market.

Changan and Leapmotor round out the top five, while other notable players such as SAIC Passenger Vehicle, Xpeng, and Great Wall Motor achieved record monthly sales, highlighting the intense competition among both established brands and newer entrants.

Why this matters

The record-breaking wholesale sales in October underscore the rapid growth and resilience of China’s NEV sector. As the segment continues to outpace the broader auto market, it plays a crucial role in stabilizing overall passenger vehicle sales during a period of market recovery.

Strong performances from both domestic brands and joint ventures indicate a broad-based shift toward electrification, reinforcing China’s position as a global leader in NEV adoption.

What this means for buyers

For consumers, the surge in NEV sales means greater choice and increased competition among manufacturers, which could lead to more attractive pricing and improved technology. Buyers can expect continued innovation and a wider range of models as automakers accelerate their electrification strategies.

With leading brands like BYD, Geely, and Chery pushing record volumes, prospective NEV buyers in China will benefit from a dynamic and rapidly evolving market.
