Nio CEO William Li Warns of Sharp China Auto Sales Decline, Reaffirms Strong Company Growth Targets

William Li, founder, chairman, and CEO of Nio Inc, has issued a stark warning about the state of China’s auto industry, predicting a significant drop in domestic retail sales this year. Despite the challenging environment, Li remains confident in Nio’s ability to achieve robust growth, highlighting recent milestones and ongoing investments.

China’s Auto Market Faces Major Downturn

Speaking at the China Auto Chongqing Summit on June 13, William Li described the current phase of China’s auto industry as the ‘most brutal final stage of competition.’ He explained that the market has shifted from a period of incremental expansion to one characterized by saturation and replacement demand.

Li warned that any remaining hopes for a sales rebound should be abandoned, noting that the domestic auto retail market fell by 19.5% year-on-year in the first five months of this year. He added that the decline widened further in early June, with drops exceeding 22% in the first few days.

Nio’s Growth Amid Industry Challenges

Despite the broader market downturn, Nio Inc expects to achieve annual sales growth of 40% to 50% this year. This target aligns with the company’s earlier projections following the milestone of its one millionth production vehicle in January.

Between January and May, Nio delivered 150,526 new vehicles, representing a year-on-year growth rate of 68.70%. The company also posted an operating profit of $184.3M (~AUD 261.8M) in the fourth quarter of last year and maintained profitability with $10M (~AUD 14.2M) in the first quarter of this year.

Investments and Multi-Brand Strategy

Li emphasized Nio’s commitment to long-term growth through heavy investment in core technologies. Over the past 11 years, the company’s cumulative research and development investment has exceeded $10.1B (~AUD 14.4B), while spending on infrastructure such as charging and battery swap networks has surpassed $2.9B (~AUD 4.2B).

Nio’s multi-brand approach is also contributing to its market performance. The company’s mass-market sub-brand Onvo and premium compact car brand Firefly are both seeing strong demand. According to Li, Firefly’s sales in the premium compact car segment have surpassed the combined total of Mini and Smart, making it the segment leader since its launch last April. The flagship ES8 model has been the sales champion in the large SUV segment for six consecutive months, and the Onvo L90 and L60 models have also attracted significant market interest.

Pure Electric Vehicle Market Trends

Li highlighted the rapid growth in the penetration rate of new energy vehicles (NEVs) in China. In May, the NEV penetration rate reached 62.9%, with pure electric models accounting for 42.2% of the overall powertrain market.

He described the transition to pure electric vehicles as irreversible, citing improvements in charging and battery swap infrastructure as key factors enhancing the user experience.

Why this matters

Nio’s outlook underscores the intense competition and shifting dynamics in China’s auto industry, with the market moving from expansion to replacement-driven demand. While the overall sector faces a significant downturn, Nio’s continued investment in technology, infrastructure, and multi-brand strategy positions it to capture growth even as others struggle.

The company’s performance and strategic direction provide insight into how leading EV makers are navigating a challenging market environment.

What this means for buyers

For consumers, Nio’s ongoing investments in technology and infrastructure could translate into better products and improved charging experiences. The strong demand for models like Firefly and the ES8 suggests that buyers may face wait times for popular vehicles.

As the market shifts toward pure electric vehicles, buyers can expect continued improvements in EV offerings and supporting infrastructure, making it an opportune time to consider transitioning to electric mobility.
