Stelato G9: Huawei-Backed Off-Road SUV to Open Pre-Orders in China on August 5

The Stelato G9, a large off-road SUV developed by Huawei and BAIC Group, will soon be available for pre-order in China. As the first rugged SUV from Huawei’s Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance (HIMA), the G9 brings significant range and off-road capabilities to the segment.

Pre-Orders and Launch Details

Stelato announced on Weibo that pre-orders for the G9 will open at 2:30 pm Beijing Time on August 5. The event will also see the debut of Maextro’s V800 and V680 luxury extended-range MPVs, both part of the HIMA alliance.

The G9 is expected to be officially launched in the third quarter, marking Stelato’s entry into the off-road SUV market.

Design and Features

The Stelato G9 stands out with its boxy design, full-width chrome trim, vertical round light clusters, and illuminated brand logo. It measures 5,206 mm (~205 inches) long, 2,050 mm (~81 inches) wide, and 1,897 mm (~75 inches) tall, with a wheelbase of 3,160 mm (~124 inches). With an optional rear-mounted storage box, the length extends to 5,377 mm (~212 inches).

Off-road features include a wading depth of 900 mm (~35 inches), a side-opening tailgate, and options such as an external storage box, power side steps, roof rack, and tow hook. A rooftop-tent version will also be available, with a roof that lifts from one side and extends into a two-part tent.

Interior and Seating

Inside, the G9 adopts a rugged design with a triple-screen center console. Buyers can choose between a 2+3 five-seater layout or a 2+2+2 six-seater configuration, the latter featuring independent captain’s chairs in the second row.

Powertrain and Performance

All versions of the Stelato G9 are built on an 800-volt high-voltage platform and use Huawei’s Giant Whale battery system. The SUV features dual motors for all-wheel drive, with a front motor rated at 160 kW and a rear motor at 277 kW, delivering a combined output of 437 kW (586 hp).

The BEV version is equipped with a 120 kWh ternary lithium battery, offering over 700 km (~435 miles) of CLTC range. The EREV variant pairs a 1.5T range extender with a 75.4 kWh battery pack, providing over 400 km (~249 miles) of CLTC electric range and a total combined range exceeding 1,300 km (~808 miles).

The G9 is factory-certified for towing up to 2,000 kg (~4,409 lbs), making it suitable for pulling travel trailers and similar loads.

Background and Alliance

Stelato is a joint venture between Huawei and Beijing Automotive Group (BAIC Group). Previously, the brand offered only the S9 sedan and S9T shooting brake. The G9 marks Stelato’s expansion into the off-road SUV segment.

In September 2025, Huawei and BAIC upgraded their partnership to a ‘strategic community’ model, pledging to invest $3B (~AUD 4.2B) over three years in design, assisted driving, and smart cockpit technologies.

Stelato is one of five brands under Huawei’s Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance, alongside Seres’ Aito, Chery’s Luxeed, Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group’s Maextro, and SAIC Motor’s Shangjie.

Why this matters

The Stelato G9 introduces a new contender in China’s large off-road SUV market, combining advanced electric and extended-range powertrains with significant off-road capability. Its launch highlights the growing collaboration between technology and automotive companies in China, as well as the increasing focus on electrified vehicles with long range and practical features.

What this means for buyers

Buyers interested in a large, technologically advanced off-road SUV will soon have the opportunity to pre-order the Stelato G9 in China. With both BEV and EREV options, multiple seating configurations, and factory-certified towing, the G9 aims to meet a wide range of needs for families and adventure seekers alike.
