Tesla has signed a major long-term agreement to purchase 90% of the electricity generated by Project Sterling, a large-scale solar and battery facility under construction in Arizona. Details of the Project Sterling Agreement
Project Sterling is a new renewable energy facility in Arizona that will combine 509 MW of solar generation with a 360 MW battery system. The project is being developed by ContourGlobal, which is owned by private equity firm KKR. Tesla’s agreement covers 90% of the plant’s output, while ContourGlobal will retain and trade the remaining 10%.
The facility is expected to come online in 2028 and will connect to the Western Area Power Administration grid, providing access to California’s energy markets. The battery system is designed for four-hour operation, offering approximately 1,440 MWh of storage—enough to continue supplying solar power to the grid after sunset.

Tesla’s Broader Clean Energy Strategy
On the same day as the Project Sterling announcement, Tesla also confirmed a separate power purchase agreement with Spanish developer Zelestra for the entire output of a 140 MW solar farm in Texas. In total, Tesla contracted for more than 640 MW of third-party solar generation and 360 MW of battery storage in a single day.
Although Tesla manufactures the Megapack grid battery and operates one of Arizona’s largest Megapack installations, the company is purchasing both solar and storage from ContourGlobal for this project. Neither Tesla nor ContourGlobal have disclosed which battery technology will be used at Project Sterling.
