BYD Confirms Great Tang EV Surges Past 100,000 Pre-Orders Ahead of Launch

BYD says its Great Tang EV full-size electric SUV has exceeded 100,000 pre-sale orders less than two weeks after reservations opened at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show. The strong early response suggests healthy demand for the brand’s new D-segment flagship SUV, which brings a large footprint, up to 950 km of claimed CLTC range, and ultra-fast charging hardware to China’s increasingly crowded premium EV market.

BYD says its new Great Tang EV has passed 100,000 pre-sale orders, reaching that milestone in less than two weeks after reservations opened at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show.

The figure was confirmed on May 7 by Lu Tian, general manager of BYD Dynasty Network’s sales division. According to the company, the SUV hit the six-figure mark on the same day the update was shared.

Fast early demand after pre-sales opened

The Great Tang EV began pre-sales at 250,000 yuan, or about 36,700 US dollars, with higher-grade versions priced as high as 320,000 yuan, roughly 47,000 US dollars.

That launch price places the model in the upper end of BYD’s lineup and reflects its role as a large, well-equipped electric SUV aimed at buyers looking for a flagship-family offering.

BYD had already signaled strong momentum for the model before the latest announcement. The company previously reported more than 30,000 pre-orders within the first 24 hours, while dealer-channel data later suggested the total had climbed beyond 60,000 units after 48 hours.

What the Great Tang EV is meant to be

BYD positions the Great Tang EV as the first D-segment flagship SUV under its Dynasty Network. The vehicle is scheduled to launch in the first half of 2026.

In size, the SUV measures 5,263 mm in length, 1,999 mm in width, and 1,790 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,130 mm. It uses a 2+2+3 seating layout, giving it room for seven occupants.

Inside, the model features a floating central infotainment screen, a display for the front passenger, and a 17.3-inch roof-mounted screen for second-row passengers. The front seats also use a dual zero-gravity configuration.

Power, charging, and chassis technology

BYD will offer the Great Tang EV in rear-wheel-drive single-motor and all-wheel-drive dual-motor forms. The company says the AWD version can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds.

The SUV uses BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery and a full-domain 1000V electrical architecture. BYD claims the model can deliver up to 950 km of CLTC range.

Charging figures are equally aggressive. BYD says the car supports a 10C flash-charging battery, 1000A charging current, and peak charging power of up to 1000 kW under compatible conditions.

Other hardware includes DiSus-A dual-chamber air suspension, rear-wheel steering, road preview capability, and crab-walk mode.

Why this matters for BYD and the market

The Great Tang EV’s early order count is notable because it shows how quickly Chinese buyers can respond to a new model when pricing, range, and technology align with market expectations.

It also matters because the flagship electric SUV segment is becoming more crowded. Just this month, Chery unveiled its Tiggo X flagship SUV, which it says produces 476 hp and offers a combined range of 1,500 km.

For BYD, the Great Tang EV could help refresh interest in the Tang nameplate at a time when the broader family has posted mixed results. According to China EV DataTracker, the Tang family recorded 1,785 domestic sales in March 2026, down 75.7% year on year, while the Tang L recorded 945 domestic sales, up 91.7% from the previous month.

Earlier in April 2025, the Tang L reached 5,229 monthly domestic sales soon after its launch. The new Great Tang EV now has the chance to reset the family’s trajectory if its pre-sale strength carries through to delivery.

Context for readers

Pre-sale numbers do not always translate directly into final retail sales, but they are often a useful early indicator of demand, especially for new Chinese EV launches. In this case, the speed of the Great Tang EV’s order intake suggests that BYD has struck a strong initial chord with its target audience.

The next key moment will be the official launch in the first half of 2026, when more details on trims, final specifications, and delivery timing should become clearer.

Why This Matters

The Great Tang EV is important because it gives a clear look at how quickly a major Chinese automaker can generate demand for a new flagship EV with advanced charging, large-battery range claims, and family-focused packaging.

Its 100,000-order result also shows the growing intensity of China’s premium electric SUV market, where range, charging speed, and cabin technology are now central battlegrounds. For BYD, the model could help strengthen the Tang nameplate and improve its position in a segment that is becoming more competitive by the month.
