IM Motors Launches LS8 Neo Electric SUV with Steer-by-Wire Chassis in China, Starting at $35,800 (~AUD 51,110)

IM Motors, a brand under SAIC, has officially introduced the LS8 Neo, a pure electric mid-to-large-sized SUV, to the Chinese market. The LS8 Neo stands out with its advanced steer-by-wire chassis and high-tech interior, starting at $35,800 (~AUD 51,110). The launch expands IM Motors’ lineup, offering two configurations built on an 800V high-voltage platform.

Design and Dimensions

The LS8 Neo maintains the family design language seen in IM Motors’ range-extended models, featuring a distinctive ‘star-ring’ light strip and matrix LED headlights. The SUV measures 5,085 mm (~200 inches) in length, 2,000 mm (~79 inches) in width, and 1,807 mm (~71 inches) in height, with a wheelbase of 3,060 mm (~120 inches). Its exterior includes hidden door handles, multi-spoke wheels, and a floating roof design for a modern, streamlined look.

Intelligent Driving and Interior Features

The LS8 Neo is equipped with roof-mounted LiDAR and the IM AD Zeta end-to-end large model, co-developed with Momenta. This system supports high-speed and urban Navigate on Autopilot (NOA) as well as full-scenario automatic parking. Inside, the cabin is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295P chip and features a 27.1-inch 5K Mini LED central screen, a 15.6-inch 3K passenger screen, and a 21.5-inch 4K ceiling-mounted rear screen.

The infotainment system integrates the ‘IM Claw’ intelligent agent, which includes the Qwen large language model. Both 5-seat and 6-seat configurations are available, offering ‘Le Corbusier’ electric sofa seats with zero-gravity modes, 4D mechanical massage, heating, and ventilation. Additional amenities include a 12.3L dual-door refrigerator and an 18-speaker audio system, with an optional 25-speaker B&O system.

Chassis and Performance

A key highlight of the LS8 Neo is its standard ‘Lizard’ digital chassis, which features dual-redundant steer-by-wire and large-angle rear-wheel steering. This setup allows for a tight turning radius of 4.85 meters and enables 180-degree U-turns in narrow spaces. The IM SynVector torque control system offers a response time of 20 milliseconds, and the vehicle is equipped with a closed-loop air suspension for enhanced ride comfort.

Power comes from the ‘Neo Hurricane’ single motor, delivering a maximum output of 300 kW (402 hp) and 500 N·m of peak torque. The LS8 Neo is available with two CATL battery options, both supporting fast charging from 10% to 80% in 17–20 minutes. The 93 kWh LFP battery provides a CLTC range of 684 km (~425 miles), while the 103 kWh ternary lithium battery offers a CLTC range of 752 km (~467 miles).

Why this matters

The launch of the LS8 Neo demonstrates IM Motors’ commitment to advancing electric vehicle technology in China, particularly with features like steer-by-wire and high-speed charging. The combination of luxury amenities, advanced driver assistance, and long-range battery options positions the LS8 Neo as a notable contender in the mid-to-large electric SUV segment.

What this means for buyers

Buyers in China now have access to a technologically advanced electric SUV with a focus on comfort, intelligent driving, and rapid charging. The LS8 Neo’s range of configurations and features makes it a strong option for those seeking a premium electric SUV experience.
