Zotye’s Right-Hand-Drive Wink Y01 Rolls Off Line, Targets Overseas Markets

Zotye Auto has announced that the right-hand-drive version of its Wink Y01 electric vehicle has rolled off the production line, marking a step forward in the company’s overseas expansion plans. The Wink Y01 is designed specifically for international markets, with mass production and deliveries scheduled for early 2027.

Wink Y01 Production Milestone

Zotye Auto (SZSE: 000980) revealed that the right-hand-drive Wink Y01 recently completed its production roll-out. This milestone follows the company’s earlier announcement in September that the international model had entered batch trial production.

The Wink Y01 is a compact battery electric vehicle developed for overseas customers, measuring over 3.9 meters (~153 inches) in length. Zotye has not yet disclosed pricing details for the new model.

Overseas Expansion Plans

Zotye is focusing its overseas strategy on South and Southeast Asia, with particular attention to India and Indonesia. The company has signed an agreement with an Indian partner to establish a KD (Knocked Down) assembly plant capable of producing 30,000 vehicles annually, and has also entered a strategic cooperation agreement with Indonesia’s BPKN.

Zotye aims to sign dealer agreements in 25 countries by the end of 2026, with a longer-term objective of reaching 55 countries worldwide.

Challenges and Uncertainties

Despite the recent production milestone, Zotye stated that the Wink Y01 has not yet generated sales and that funding for the project remains uncertain. The company emphasized that moving from production roll-out to mass production and market launches will require continued investment.

Zotye also noted that regulatory certification, distribution network development, and demand in target markets present ongoing uncertainties that could affect the Wink Y01’s overseas sales timeline.

Why this matters

The roll-out of the right-hand-drive Wink Y01 signals Zotye’s renewed activity in the global electric vehicle market following a period of bankruptcy restructuring. The company’s focus on South and Southeast Asia, along with its dealer network ambitions, highlights the growing importance of these regions for Chinese EV manufacturers.

However, Zotye’s warning about funding and regulatory challenges underscores the hurdles that automakers face when expanding internationally, especially after a period of dormancy.

What this means for buyers

Potential buyers and dealers in targeted overseas markets should be aware that while Zotye has made progress with the Wink Y01, actual sales and deliveries are not expected until early 2027. The project’s future will depend on the company’s ability to secure funding and navigate regulatory requirements in each market.
