Nio Launches Global AI Talent Program as It Deepens Bet on Intelligent Vehicle Technology

Nio has launched the “Nio AGI Super Star Program” to recruit top AI talent from universities around the world, with a focus on physical-world foundation models, end-to-end smart driving assistance and enterprise intelligence systems. The move reflects CEO William Li’s push to make AI a core part of Nio’s product development and operations in 2026.

Nio is stepping up its artificial intelligence strategy with a new global recruitment initiative aimed at students, recent graduates and interns with strong research backgrounds.

The company has officially started the “Nio AGI Super Star Program,” a talent pipeline designed to bring in candidates with experience in top academic conferences or other advanced research credentials. According to the job posting published on Friday, the effort is being led by Nio’s newly formed AGI committee.

What the program is targeting

Nio says the program is built around research areas that span the full technology stack, from model training to in-car applications and business software. The company wants participants to work on physical-world base models, end-to-end smart driving assistance and enterprise-grade intelligent systems.

The automaker says its broader goal is to move AI beyond digital-only use cases and apply it to the real world. That includes using large volumes of driving data for pre-training large models and then refining them through closed-loop data iteration.

AI for cabins, operating systems and agents

One of the areas included in the program is the NOMI in-car assistant, which Nio describes as a personalized virtual companion built on persistent memory. Another is Harness OS, where recruits may contribute to the development of SkyOS, Nio’s vehicle operating system.

Nio says SkyOS is intended to serve as the base layer for automotive intelligence and digitalization. The company also said that, in the AI era, agents are expected to become the main form of onboard applications.

Fits into William Li’s broader AI push

The recruitment drive comes shortly after founder, chairman and CEO William Li made clear that AI would be a much bigger priority for the company in 2026. In an internal meeting on January 14, he said Nio would materially increase its investment in AI and use it to improve both product competitiveness and operating efficiency.

Li said AI would not be limited to smart driving. He said it would also be used across research and development, manufacturing and the supply chain. He added that the company had created an AGI committee to coordinate AI adoption across its business units.

Earlier, on January 6, Li told media including CnEVPost that any automaker with ambition should be considered an AI company. That view places Nio alongside other Chinese EV makers that are racing to integrate artificial intelligence into their products and internal operations.

Why this matters

Nio’s move is another sign that the EV market is no longer just about batteries, range and charging speed. Automakers are increasingly competing on software, data and AI capabilities, especially in smart driving and in-car digital experiences.

By recruiting talent directly from universities and research labs, Nio is trying to build deeper internal capabilities rather than relying only on outside vendors. That could matter for the company’s long-term competitiveness if AI becomes a defining layer in electric vehicles, from driver assistance to cabin interaction and factory efficiency.

It also shows how Chinese EV makers are widening the race beyond hardware. The next phase of competition may be shaped as much by model training, operating systems and agent-based software as by traditional vehicle engineering.

Why This Matters

Nio’s new AI hiring push shows how quickly the EV industry is evolving from hardware competition to software and model development. For readers, that matters because the companies that control vehicle AI may end up controlling the most valuable parts of the customer experience, including smart driving, voice assistants and personalized in-car services.

The program also signals that Nio wants to build long-term AI capability in-house. If successful, that could help the company improve vehicle features, streamline operations and better compete with other Chinese automakers that are also investing heavily in AI.
