BYD Denza N8 EV Spotted in China With 1,193 hp Tri-Motor AWD and Up to 1,003 km Range

The all-electric BYD Denza N8 has been seen undisguised at a factory staging area in China, revealing new details about the upcoming SUV. With a tri-motor all-wheel-drive system producing 1,193 horsepower and a range of up to 1,003 km (about 623 miles) on the CLTC cycle, the Denza N8 is positioned as a high-performance entry in the electric SUV segment.

Design and Features

The BYD Denza N8 stands out with its 205-litre front trunk, which features two-layer storage, a drainable structure, and separate compartments for wet and dry items. The rear seats can recline to a maximum angle of 146 degrees, enhancing passenger comfort.

Denza has announced three exterior colour options for the N8: Aurora Green, Deep Space Blue, and Sunlight Orange. The electric N8 is distinct from the plug-in hybrid Denza N8 that launched in 2023.

Dimensions and Variants

The Denza N8 measures 5,150 mm (~203 inches) in length, 1,999 mm (~78.7 inches) in width, and 1,820 mm (~71.7 inches) in height, with a 3,075 mm (~121.1 inches) wheelbase. The six-seat Denza N8L variant shares the same wheelbase but is slightly longer at 5,200 mm (~204.7 inches).

Powertrain and Performance

Regulatory filings list two rear-wheel-drive versions of the Denza N8, offering motor outputs of 320 kW and 370 kW. The top-spec e3 tri-motor all-wheel-drive version combines a 270 kW front motor with two 310 kW rear motors, delivering a total rated output of 890 kW, or approximately 1,193 hp.

A roof-mounted LiDAR sensor is visible on the photographed vehicles, though specific driver-assistance features for each variant have not been detailed.

Battery and Range

The Denza N8 is equipped with LFP Blade batteries supplied by BYD subsidiary FinDreams Battery. Reported battery capacities are 105.792 kWh and 130.15 kWh.

Published CLTC range figures are 800 km (~497 miles), 840 km (~522 miles), 970 km (~603 miles), and up to 1,003 km (~623 miles). Estimated WLTP ranges are around 648 km (~403 miles), 680 km (~423 miles), 786 km (~488 miles), and 812 km (~505 miles), depending on the configuration.

Why this matters

The BYD Denza N8 brings a high-performance, long-range electric SUV option to the Chinese market, featuring advanced battery technology and a powerful tri-motor setup. Its combination of comfort features, such as a large front trunk and highly adjustable rear seats, adds to its appeal for families and performance enthusiasts alike.

With multiple range and powertrain options, the Denza N8 demonstrates the growing diversity and capability of electric SUVs in China.

What this means for buyers

Buyers interested in a premium electric SUV with significant range and performance should keep an eye on the Denza N8 as it approaches launch. The availability of both rear-wheel-drive and tri-motor all-wheel-drive versions, along with a choice of battery sizes, allows for tailored options depending on driving needs.

Those considering the Denza N8 should watch for official launch details and independent charging test results to confirm the manufacturer’s performance and charging claims.
