Li Auto Founder Compares Next-Gen Mega MPV to First iPhone Ahead of September Launch

Li Auto’s second-generation Mega electric minivan is set to begin sales on September 2, bringing a host of advanced features to the MPV segment. Founder and CEO Li Xiang has drawn bold parallels between the new Mega and the disruptive impact of the first iPhone, signaling high ambitions for the model’s market influence.

Li Xiang’s Vision for the Mega MPV

On March 31, Li Auto founder and CEO Li Xiang shared his perspective on the upcoming second-generation Mega via his official Weibo page. He criticized traditional gasoline-powered minivans for their poor suspension systems, which he said resulted in subpar driving and riding experiences. According to Li Xiang, the new Mega leverages BEV architecture to introduce significant technological upgrades to the MPV category.

Li Xiang compared the new Mega’s potential impact on the MPV market to the first iPhone’s effect on the mobile phone industry, suggesting that the vehicle could redefine expectations in its segment.

Key Features and Technology

The second-generation Li Auto Mega introduces several advanced features, including an 800V active suspension system, steer-by-wire technology, and rear-wheel steering. The model is equipped with four LiDAR sensors and dual in-house-developed Mach M100 chips, delivering 2,560 TOPS of computing power.

The Mega retains its distinctive exterior styling with minor updates such as semi-hidden door handles. Inside, the cabin offers a seven-seat 2+2+3 layout, aiming to balance comfort and practicality.

Performance and Specifications

The new Mega is powered by a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing 413 kW (553 hp). It uses a CATL-supplied 108 kWh ternary NMC battery pack, providing a CLTC range of 710 km (~441 miles). The vehicle’s dimensions are 5,355 mm (~211 inches) in length, 1,965 mm (~77 inches) in width, and 1,850 mm (~73 inches) in height, with a wheelbase of 3,300 mm (~130 inches).

First-Generation Mega: Market Performance

The first-generation Li Auto Mega launched in March 2024. According to China EV DataTracker, cumulative deliveries reached 32,508 units. However, the model was also subject to a recall campaign affecting 11,000 minivans across China. The first-generation Mega is currently priced between $78,655 (~AUD 109,795) and $83,109 (~AUD 116,013).

Why this matters

The launch of the second-generation Li Auto Mega highlights the growing emphasis on advanced technology and driving dynamics in the electric MPV segment. By introducing features such as 800V architecture, steer-by-wire, and high-level driver assistance, Li Auto is positioning the Mega as a benchmark for innovation in family-oriented electric vehicles.

Li Xiang’s comparison to the iPhone underscores the company’s ambition to reshape consumer expectations and set new standards for the MPV market.

What this means for buyers

Buyers interested in electric MPVs will soon have access to a model with advanced suspension, high computing power, and a spacious seven-seat layout. Those considering the first-generation Mega should note its recall history and compare the new features and technology offered in the second generation before making a decision.
