Tesla China Sells 86,166 Vehicles in August, Ending Three-Month Growth Streak

Tesla China’s wholesale sales reached 86,166 vehicles in August 2026, marking a 3.57% increase year-on-year but a 7.92% decline from July. This result ends a three-month run of sequential gains for Tesla in the world’s largest electric vehicle market.

August Sales Performance

According to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), Tesla China’s wholesale sales in August 2026 totaled 86,166 vehicles. This figure represents a 3.57% rise compared to August 2025, when sales reached 83,192 units. However, it is a 7.92% decrease from July’s yearly high of 93,579 vehicles.

August marked the tenth consecutive month of year-on-year growth for Tesla China. It was also the third-highest monthly total for the company this year, just behind July and June. The August result was the second-highest for that month on record, falling only 531 vehicles short of the August 2024 record.

Year-to-Date Results and Market Share

In the first eight months of 2026, Tesla China’s wholesale sales reached 647,694 vehicles, up 25.63% from the same period last year. This total is 3.63% higher than the previous record of 624,983 units set in 2025, and 132,142 vehicles more than a year earlier.

Wholesale sales figures include both domestic deliveries and exports from Tesla’s Shanghai factory. In July, exports from Shanghai hit a record 66,330 vehicles, accounting for 70.88% of Tesla China’s wholesale sales that month. By contrast, domestic deliveries in July were 27,249 vehicles, down 32.91% year-on-year.

Competitor Comparison

Tesla continues to face strong competition in China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) market. In August, Leapmotor delivered 103,129 vehicles globally, surpassing Tesla China’s wholesale sales for the third month in a row. BYD also posted robust numbers, selling 440,293 NEVs in August—up 17.84% year-on-year and 5.03% from July. BYD’s passenger NEV sales alone totaled 433,384 vehicles.

Other notable competitors include Zeekr, which delivered 36,981 vehicles, and Nio Inc, with 35,836 deliveries in August. Overall, the CPCA estimated that passenger NEV manufacturers recorded wholesale sales of 1.51 million vehicles in August, up 16% year-on-year and 4% from July. Tesla China accounted for about 5.71% of these sales.

Historical Context

Tesla experienced its first-ever annual sales decline in China in 2025, with 127,728 units sold. Despite this, the company has returned to year-on-year growth in 2026, although its market share has been pressured by the rapid expansion of local competitors.

Why this matters

Tesla’s performance in August 2026 highlights both its resilience and the increasing challenges it faces in China’s competitive NEV market. While the company continues to post year-on-year growth, its sequential decline and shrinking market share underscore the intensifying competition from domestic brands like BYD and Leapmotor.

The data also shows that exports remain a significant driver for Tesla China, with domestic demand showing signs of weakness. The coming months will be crucial in determining whether Tesla can regain momentum in the world’s largest EV market.

What this means for buyers

For consumers, the growing competition among NEV brands in China means more choices and potentially better pricing or features. Buyers should closely monitor upcoming sales data for September and October to see if Tesla or its rivals adjust their strategies or pricing in response to shifting market dynamics.

Those considering a Tesla should also keep an eye on export trends and local delivery figures, as these may influence availability and wait times in different regions.
